Markethouse Restaurant and Bar

De’Ann Wellwerts cultivated an interest in hospitality and restaurants while she was in high school in Glendale Heights, IL. “It wasn’t a career path I had considered before, butone of my teachers gave me the tools to explore the hospitality industry,” she says. “I never looked back.”After graduating high school in 2005, Wellwerts enrolled in the School of Culinary Arts at Kendall College in Chicago. Her first chef-instructor, Michel Maloiseau, set the tone for her in the culinary world. “He had confidence in me and encouraged me to follow whatever path this industry takes me.”

While in attaining her degree, Wellwerts started working as a cook at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel and Towers, gaining experience in hotel dining from the restaurants to room service and banquets. At this same time to further her education, she began pursuing degrees in restaurant management and hotel management at Triton College in River Grove, IL. It was in the Sheraton kitchens that Wellwerts met Executive Chef Scott Walton. He offered her a job on the line at his new restaurant, Markethouse, which she refers to as “one of the greatest opportunities of my life.”

A year and a half later, she was promoted to culinary supervisor, assisting in overseeing back-of-house employees, banquet food operations, restaurant food operation, and working with the chef on developing new dishes. Bringing together her educational training and her kitchen expertise, Wellwerts became Markethouse’s restaurant assistant manager in February 2012 and supports the general manager in all aspects of operations. In December 2012, she was promoted to Executive Chef. When she’s not at the restaurant, Wellwerts can be found relaxing on Chicago’s lakefront with a good book or dreaming up her next cruise-line vacation. She lives in Chicago with her boyfriend, Jack-a-ranian (Jack Russell Terrier-Pomeranian mix), bearded dragon, and chinchilla.
