Sam Toia: Protect the Current Tipping System for the Benefit of Employees, Diners and Restaurants

This week, IRA President & CEO Sam Toia wrote an op-ed in Crain's Chicago to explain why the tip credit is so crucial to the vitality of Chicago's restaurant industry and the hundreds of thousands of people we employ.

"We fully support restaurants offering the best wages, schedules and benefits possible," said Toia. "But when 95 cents from every dollar a restaurant takes in goes right back into wages, food, utilities and other overhead costs, it’s unrealistic to expect all restaurants to absorb massive labor cost increases and remain in business. This is why we support the tipped wage and tip credit."
