IRA on Plastic Straw Ban Non-Binding Referendum: Sustainability, Flexibility are Key for Restaurants

Monday, November 12, 2018

IRA President & CEO Sam Toia shared his insights on the recent non-binding referendum in the City of Chicago that asked “Should the City of Chicago ban the use of plastic straws within the corporate city limits?” The non-binding referendum was approved by 55% of voters.

“Restaurateurs and chefs champion the environment as well as best practices that will lend to their overall sustainability efforts,” Toia said. “Many of our members have already switched to non-plastic straws alternatives.”

The IRA supports restaurants’ efforts to voluntarily decrease their environmental footprint in ways that work best for their brands and customers. Any proposed regulations on plastic straws should be fully cognizant of customer requests, drive-thru areas, the medical necessity of straws, and other considerations.
