Governor Rauner Signs IRA-Backed Local Liquor License Exemption Legislation

Friday, August 3, 2018

This week, Governor Rauner signed legislation that grants authority to local liquor control commissioners to give exemptions for businesses who wish to serve alcohol within 100 feet of a church, school, and other community establishment previously prohibited by state law.

The IRA was fully supportive of this pragmatic legislation that gives control to local liquor authorities and reduces the time and cost of appealing to the General Assembly for liquor license exemptions near churches and schools. We are currently working with the City of Chicago on an ordinance that addresses the procedures by which liquor license applicants near churches or schools would work with the local Alderman, community groups, and the Liquor Commissioner to obtain their liquor license.
