POSTER AND SIGNAGE REQUIREMENTS
Do you have all the required federal and state employment notices posted in a “conspicuous place” where employees can see them? What about public health notices? Failing to comply with these laws can result in costly fines. The following are required employment and public health notices.

Required Federal Postings:
1. Equal Employment/Americans with Disabilities Act
This poster must be displayed by all employers who have 15 or more employees. It cautions against discrimination based on race, color, age, religion, sex, national origin, handicap, veteran status, and disability.
2. Federal Minimum Wage/Overtime
All employers covered under the Fair Labor Standards Act are required to display this poster about minimum wage, overtime and child labor laws.
3. Occupational Safety & Health Administration Job Safety and Health Protection
All employers covered by the federal OSHA law are required to display this poster.
4. Employee Polygraph Protection
The poster “Notice - employer Polygraph Protection Act” explains the prohibitions, exemptions, examination rights, and enforcement of this law.
5. Family and Medical Leave Act Compliance Kit
This poster must be posted by employers required to give leave for certain family and medical reasons.
6. USERRA - Your Rights Under USERRA
This poster must be posted by employers to explain the protection of job rights for individuals who voluntarily leave employment positions to undertake military service or certain types of service in the National Disaster Medican System.
Required State of Illinois Postings:
1. Notice to Employer and Employees
This poster is required for all Illinois employers and includes information about payment of wages, child labor law, minimum wage law and other labor laws.
2. Victim’s Economic Security & Safety Act (VESSA)
This act provides that employers may not discharge or discriminate against an employee who is a victim of domestic violence or who has a family or household member who is a victim of domestic violence, for taking up to a total of 12 workweeks of leave from work during any 12-month period to address the domestic violence. This poster is required for all Illinois employers.
3. Notice of Employees Workers’ Compensation
This poster briefly explains employees’ responsibilities if a work–related accident occurs. Also, has a place to list employer’s insurance carrier or the person administering workers’ compensation claims. It is required of all Illinois employers.
4. Notice to Workers About Unemployment Insurance Benefits
This poster explains how to file a claim, benefits amounts, and taxation on benefits.
5. Emergency Care for Choking
This poster explains emergency care for conscious and unconscious choking victims. It has a place to list an emergency phone number. It must be posted in every foodservice facility.
6. Smoking Requirements
According to the Illinois Clean Indoor Air Act, as of January 1, 2008, no smoking is permitted in any public place, including bars, taverns, restaurants and night clubs. No smoking will be permitted within 15 feet of any entrance to a public place. This applies to all establishments in the state of Illinois. Signs clearly stating “No Smoking” symbol shall be conspicuously posted in every establishment.
7. Employees Must Wash Hands Before Returning to Work
This poster must be placed in employee toilet facilities used by employees in foodservice facilities. This poster is also available in Spanish.
8. Hand Washing Poster w/ Pictures
This poster provides a step-by-step guide to effective hand–washing for employees.
9. Pregnancy/Alcohol Warning
The following sign must be posted in every Illinois establishment serving liquor. “Government Warning: According to the Surgeon General, women should not drink alcoholic beverages during pregnancy because of the risk of birth defects.”
10. “Tax Included” Notice
According to state law, sales tax must be stated as a distinct and separate item from the selling price of the item being sold. When that is not possible, such as when serving liquor by the drink from a bar, then this requirement is waived if the purchasers are notified by the following sign: “Notice: All state and local taxes included in the price of drinks”.
Required City of Chicago Postings:
1. Communicable Disease
Chicago foodservice establishments shall post the following notice in a permanent location in employee restrooms, changing areas, or kitchens: “No persons who is affected with any disease in a communicable form, or is carrier of such disease, or who has a gastrointestinal disturbance, sore throat, or a discharging of infected wound, sore or lesion, shall handle food, drink utensils or equipment.”
2. Chicago Consumer Advisory
Chicago foodservice establishments that offer or allow consumers to order animal foods in raw or under-cooked form must post this advisory: “The Chicago Department of Public Health advises that consumption of raw or undercooked foods of animal origin such as beef, eggs, fish, lamb, pork, poultry, or shellfish may result in an increased risk of foodborne illness. Individuals with certain underlying health conditions may be at higher risk and should consult their physician or public health official for further information.”
3. Prohibits Under 21 Liquor Sales Posters
Chicago foodservice establishments that serve alcoholic liquor must post this advisory: “To be sold or served alcoholic beverages on these premises, you birthday must be on or before today’s date in ____. Be prepared to show proof of age.”
4. City of Chicago Smoking Requirements
